Podcasting is a powerful tool to amplify your reach and build your personal brand. Here's how to make it work for you, based on insights from our weekly "Ask Me Anything Audacious" session

Why Podcasting Rocks:

  • Podcasts give your audience a chance to connect with you on a personal level. They hear your voice, feel your passion, and get a sense of who you are. They get to experience your personal brand and get a taste of your expertise.
  • Sharing your knowledge on podcasts positions you as a go-to expert in your industry and helps you get seen and noticed as a leader, especially if you select the right podcasts to appear on and talk about topics you really want to be known for.
  • Speaker bookers and potential clients can also listen to a podcast with you to get a good understanding of who you are and a feel for if you’d be the right choice for them

Question 1: How do I find a podcast to be a guest on?

  • Google is Your Friend: Start with a simple search: "podcast seeking guests" + your industry or the topics you most want to speak on.
  • Tech Tools to the Rescue:
  • Social Connections:
  • Paid Directories:

Question 2: What do I talk about on a podcast?

  • Strategic Topic Selection: Choose podcasts and topics that align with your personal brand and target audience. Don't apply to be on a show that isn't really your audience or has a format or list of topics that you would struggle with. Most shows have an outline of exactly what they talk about, who they are looking for and how the podcast runs.
  • Pre-podcast Prep: Listen to the show, follow the host on socials, and get to know what you will be in for. Is it a conversational style, do they have set questions for each show, how long is the show, is it live streamed, do they record video and audio?
  • Be succinctly strategic: Even if the podcast has set questions, make sure you have a dot-point list of the salient points you want to get across to make sure the listener understands your value. That might be a case study, insight, key phrase or anecdote that will make you memorable.

Question 3: What do I do once I’ve been on a podcast?

The Power of Promotion: Don't just show up and disappear! Much as it’s exciting to be interviewed, the real value of being a podcast guest is well after the show has been recorded. Unlike a live radio interview, most podcasts get listened to when the audience most wants to. They might listen while commuting, in the gym or walking the dog… so you have to be a show promoter as well as a guest.

  • Spread the Word: Announce your appearance before, during, and after the episode goes live. Tag the host and share the show link.
  • Repurpose the Content: Create a blog post (we call it a plog) with a link to the episode with a summary of your interview and links to the host and show. , share snippets on social media, and include a link on your website.
  • Show the Love: Tag the host and share the podcast link generously, create a backlink on your website, and repurpose it into snippets and articles, send out a newsletter to your database with a link.

Podcasting isn't just about being on a show; it's about what you do with it afterwards. Maximise your impact by actively promoting your appearances and repurposing the content to reach a wider audience. Use backlinks and share widely to build your reputation and improve SEO.
